Plantar Fasciitis Rehab – Night Splints & Ice Massage
What can I use to help treat the painful and acute phase of plantar fasciitis?
In the acute phase of rehab for this injury, it is important to manage pain levels. Two great ways to do this are through night splints and ice massages.
Night splints can be purchased at many different health and wellness stores. Night splints are beneficial due to their ability to keep your foot in a position of dorsiflexion (toes pointed toward nose) while you sleep. It is natural for your foot to go into plantar flexion (toes away from nose) overnight which causes the plantar fascia on the underside of your foot to become taught. By wearing night splints, this position is avoided and you can avoid that painful first step in the morning.
If you are able to freeze a water bottle, this can also be a great tool to alleviate pain with. By rolling a frozen water bottle across the bottom of your foot, you are receiving the benefits of both cryotherapy and therapeutic massage to this localized area. Both have been shown to decrease pain levels.
