Shoulder Impingement Syndrome Special Test
I think I have shoulder impingement, what can I do to help verify this?
If you think that you may have shoulder impingement, there are a few special tests that can be done at home to see if this condition can relate to something that you are going through. The first test that can be done is the Hawkins-Kennedy Impingement Test. To perform this test:
- Have a parent, sibling, or roommate flex your shoulder & elbow to 90 degrees & internally rotate your shoulder
If you have any pain or apprehension with this motion, you may have shoulder impingement.
The next test you will want to try is what’s called the Empty Can Test. To perform this test:
- Abduct your shoulders to 90 degrees then bring them about 30 degrees horizontally towards your body & rotate your arms so that your thumbs face the floor
- Have your helper push down on your humerus as you try to resist them
If there is any weakness or pain in your affected shoulder, than you may have shoulder impingement syndrome with an involvement of your supraspinatus tendon.
